Last night Cai seemed tired and didn't want to eat a lot, and when I got up this morning and went to clean his litter box I noticed blood, a lot of blood. Lots of crying, lots of arguing, called about 7 Vets, most wouldn't see ferrets, the others were closed. Finally we pack up and drive 30 min to a diff. sate (Virginia), the Vet we saw didn't know much about ferrets at all and couldn't tell me what she thought was wrong with them, said it could have been many things, colitis, helicobacter, bacterial infection, stomach virus, or even cancer. So we give him 12 ml of Sub-Q fluids, and decide to do the Triple treatment of Metro, Amoxi and Pepsid. Brought him home around 5pm, he passes another stool with less blood but still blood, it's liquidy and somewhat mucousy blood and his stool seems to be "chunks" as weird as it may sound, it's watery though.
When we got home he was feeling a little better, since then has been sleeping, passed another stool not long ago with that's about the same as it was last time. He vomited once at the Vets but didn't before we went or when we got home, possibly stress induced as he gets very nervous out at new places.
The shelter that I've adopted all my babies from and who I'm good friends with paid for the Vet bill for us, I can't describe how thankful I am for that, we had no form of payment and don't know what I would have done if they didn't help. Bill was $126 for an examination, 2 medicines and a vile of Sub-Q. I'm giving him his first doses soon.
We still have no idea what is causing this, lets hope it's something fixable or manageable. The medicines he is on covers a lot of things, so prayers, hopes and wishes that it helps. It's going to be a long night for both of us.

I'm so sorry, and so soon after Juliet must make this twice as hard Here's sending good vibes in Caillou's direction, and hoping that you find an answer soon. BTW I've always loved the name "Caillou", having grown up in France and being a rock collector!

I fed him at 8:00pm, gave Pepsid at 8:30pm and gave Metro and Amoxi at 9:30. Right after that he passed another stool and NO BLOOD! (dance) There may have been one drop or so but visibly it seems to have no blood, previously there was a lot of liquidy blood. It's still watery and is projectile diarrhea but it's better nonetheless. I'm hoping he will only get better from here on out. Warning: Graphic poop pictures This is the first one I saw that wasn't in his litter box- This is the one after that- And after that- And then the last one with very very little to no blood- The last one was 1 hr after Pepsid. Please please please only get better from now my sweet boy

I'm hoping it's a minor thing. It's not hemorrhaging, at least, and it's at the low end of the GI tract. Maybe it was just a big poop that caused a little tear in the rectum or colon? It can happen. I'd think if it was an ulcer more than likely the blood would be black. I guess if there was a prolapse you'd know it. Get well soon, Caillou.

Me too, a minor thing.. whatever it is I'm glad at least one poop didn't contain a tablespoon of liquid blood like the others.. it was so nerve-wracking, I thought I was going to lose him earlier today, bleeding is a scarey thing. I'm waiting to see what his next poop looks like, hopefully no more blood. Just hang in there until Monday Cai <3 my Vet will be able to help figure out what it is and treat him better, he's seen him many times and may not be the most knowledgeable Vet but you don't realize just how much you trust them until you have to go to a stranger for an emergency.
The Vet there did well in giving him Sub-Q fluids, examining him and prescribing the Triple treatment, the only test that could have told us anything really would have been an X-ray, but it's hard when you have no idea what you're looking for.

yeah, soft tissue doesn't show well on x-rays without contrast. He had that much blood earlier? That is scary. Best wishes. If he's not bleeding now he should be ok until Monday. Fingers crossed.

It seemed to be a lot of blood, in the litter box there was more. I feel relieved with just that one poop having little to no blood... he had 12 ml of Sub-Q fluids, he ate 10 ml of soup, took all his meds and is acting better. For the first time all day today, I feel hopeful. And very, very grateful for everyone here and everyone on the FB page. Over 60+ comments wishing good luck and prayers, and Katt, Stef, Sherry, Heather and several others have been there to help me, couldn't have done it without you guys.
Katt and Sherry think it may be caused by stress and depression from losing his best friend Juliet about 3 weeks ago, a delayed reaction or stress build up. But the lady who runs the shelter around here (who paid for his Vet bill for us) has an idea also, says maybe the gingivitis he has had for 3 months and going poisoned him.. he did two 10 day rounds of Clindamycin, and one 10 day round of Baytril, it won't go away. So many things can cause this, from simple and fixable to complex and lasting..
And bad news, my Vet won't be back until Friday the 26th. Crap. There are several (4+) other Vets he can see, but I trust my Vet more than them as I have been to 3-4+ others over the years.

He's doing better! I left to make his soup snack, when I left my room they were both sound asleep, when I came back 5 min later I walk into my room and they are both sitting on my bed looking at me and come give me cuddles when I sit down. Even better is Caillou willingly ate 1 oz of soup! He didn't want it at first, so I put about 2 drops of salmon oil on the first spoonful and he gobbled the rest up. I added extra eggshell powder to the last 2 soups hoping to firm his poops up, he last pooped at 9:30 so it's been about 4 hours, expecting another one any time now, he usually (for the past 4 mo since starting raw) poops every 6 hr or so. He is definitely feeling better and it's noticeable. He's walking around, sniffing, rolling around on a blanket and climbing up and down on my bed, I was scratching his back and he got bottle brush and seemed kinda playful. Whatever was wrong, the Triple treatment is helping. He has a better appetite, is a lot less lethargic, last stool was no blood, I'm so happy he's feeling better. I am very confident he's going to be okay. He isn't back to normal just yet, but he's well on his way from the looks of it!

I'm gonna say it, he's acting normal. He is playing like normal, he fought with Marcie, chased each other, running, jumping, climbing, dancing, he's feeling A LOT better! 8 hours ago I thought I was going to lose him, and now I don't think that at all.
The significant change is almost unbelievable, watching him right now you couldn't tell he was at deaths door a few hours ago. Keep it up Cai!!

Caillou has done nothing but improved since starting the meds, no blood in his stool, his appetite is back, energy is good, he's doing good! At 5:00 am he passed another non bloody stool, then I fed him and then at 9:00 am I fed him and gave him his Metro, Amoxi and Pepsid. He was hungry and eager to come out of his cage. I'm compiling a list of every idea we have had to as what could have caused this, along with all his symptoms, everything I gave him and when he started improving so I can give it all to my Vet when he's back in town. If he keeps improving we are holding off on the vet visit until the 26th when my Vet is back in town. It's been a group decision, as I won't be the one paying for the bill. And my Vet will be able to diagnose and treat him better than a vet Cai has never been to. We dodged a bullet, I'm very lucky to still have my baby boy with me and going strong. He's a fighter and we weren't about to give up. Considering the sever it of his previous condition it really is a mirable he is so much better. Praise God
