My 7 yr old ferret, Sophie began having trouble walking this morning- her back legs won't support her. She seemed fine last nite. Got her in to the vet who drew blood and sent to a lab. Should get results tomorrow. She also did test blood sugar which was fine. Am concerned about her falling in her cage, which is a 3 level. Any thoughts about either her safety in the cage or what is causing the weakness?

At 7 yrs old and that if the BG is normal (over 90....some vets have a weird concept that 75 is considered normal and it's not) I would be considering that a possibility might be a saddle thrombosis. This often leaves a ferret with hind end weakness or a disability. It usually takes a few days but the ferret will regain a certain amount of mobility in this case. The one thing to note, ferrets who suffer from a saddle thrombosis often have a heart condition. Consider it a precursor or warning of an underlying issue. This is only a possibility and certainly no attempt in a diagnosis. As far as caging....all of my heart condition and insulinoma ferrets live on a single level cage. It's the safest way to prevent them from a terrible fall. I don't know if there is anyway to make your cage into a single level but it's really the only way to make is safe for a movement impaired ferret ciao

I replied to this in our switching thread but just want to say I'm thinking of dear Sophie and hoping for a good recovery.

All my best wishes to Sophie. Have you noticed her staring off into space? Was the test a fasting blood test?
I don't want to alarm you but the first fasting blood tests that Ponce had were fine. His symptoms of hind leg weakness went away and then came back. He would often stare into space. The next vet visit found Insulinoma.
There is alot of debate about how low the BG should be to indicate Insulinoma. Fingers crossed that it's not that serious and just something simple to explain.
