So my best friend purchased a ferret today. I was out with my parents and received a text from him about this ferret he saw at the pet store by his house. He wanted me to go to the store with him to get him/her because he/she was kept in a horrible cage and he couldn't get him/her out of his mind. I had a long talk with him about ferret ownership and what it can entail (beyond the playing he does with mine, haha) and he was still game/ready. We went to the store, and I almost died when I saw the poor thing. He was kept in one of those tanks they keep the mice in, that are like set into a wall... I immediately knew why he wanted to rescue him so badly. As we were checking out, the employees were all sad he was going, I guess they all loved to play with him and even named him Leche (Spanish for milk). My best friend decided he liked the name and kept it According to his paperwork, he was born 9/21/14, so he's about 11 weeks old. We stopped by my house and let him meet the boys really quickly. He loved them I love albinos! It's so sad but they're always the only ones left when I see a single ferret at the store.

Albinos used to remind me of lab rats, but we love our Rosa. Leche is awesome. I'm glad he found a home. What's his personality like? Rosa was a B when we got her but she's finally calming down and doesn't even pick on Lola much anymore. But she is still a bit wired and still bites sometimes when she wants down.
Personally, I don't think I've ever seen an albino in a store. Lately all we see are silvers and chocolates and an occasional sable. But we don't frequent pet stores cuz we have enough fuzzies, lol.

unclejoe I am so glad they stopped there, it was his mom's impromptu decision to go and get some Xmas stuff for their dog he was definitely in crazy baby mode, but he really is a sweetie, and it's obvious they really did handle him a lot at the store. He already knows how hard (or soft! lol) he can play nip and didn't bite outside of that at all. He got so excited when he got to run around that he bottle brushed, it was adorable. I think he's a picky little butt though, I couldn't get him to take to coconut oil, EVOO, or even ferretone when we tried to trim his nails. Mine had one sniff of the coconut oil and went bonkers lol

I've had to force ferretone on a few ferts, but out of 2 dozen all have liked it once they tried it. Same could be true with the other oils.

unclejoe I did try to dab them on his nose and tongue but it didn't phase him. I'm hoping he was just thinking, "no time for eating! Must play & run!" BFF has coconut oil and EVOO at home so hopefully if he tries again, Mr. Leche will nom.

Leche is just darling. It sounds like the employees were good to him, even if his living conditions were not good.
I hope your friend will join the Forum and let us know how Leche is doing.
I may have to make a trip to Chicago. Your city has some awfully cute little ones.

@poncesmom yes, it was so nice to know that the poor bubs at least got playtime away from that fish tank. It's so sad though, Elwood is only about an inch longer than him, but feels 50x heavier. Poor Leche has no muscle mass whatsoever since he didn't move around much in there. I can't wait for him to start bulking up. BFF isn't one for an online presence, but he comes over 3 or 4 times a week and intends on bringing Leche with when he does so he gets a lot of ferret playtime, too. I definitely will take an inordinate amount of pictures, like usual

I love that Leche will have friends. My Wynstan was the same way. He was seven months old and still in the small Petco glass cage, when we found him. He had to be taught (by the others) how to climb stairs, get into the tub and learn to play and frolic. He caught on fast and so will Leche.
We can never have enough pictures, so I'm looking forward to them.

A little trick to get them to start accepting oil. Put a couple drops on their bellies. They will want to clean it off, They will eventually lick it off to clean themselves and they will start to like the taste. And even if they don't lick it off it is good for their skin.
I used to do this to trim their nails.
Put the oil on their bellies. while they laid on their back licking it off, I would go around and trim their nails.

@deariie Leche was at the Pet Supplies Plus on Elston & Addison. I got Domino and Elwood from the Petco on Harlem & Forest Preserve. Pet Supplies Plus on Foster and Harlem always has some. I saw some at the Petco on Lawrence and Pulaski recently also. I live on the nw side, I don't really go to any stores outside my area.
The GCFA also takes volunteers, if Lyons isn't a horrible drive for you. The younger girl in charge is also... not so friendly.

@deariie not a problem! The girl in charge at GCFA, I believe her name was Allison... She was just condescending and short, both on the phone and in person when I was there to adopt Coconut. It was off-putting, so much so that when I decided to get a third, I was dreading having to deal with her to adopt the third, and thus was ecstatic when Elwood fell into my lap and I didn't have to. The volunteers and the other woman, I believe Sue, were all very nice though.
