@poncesmom, What did you mash that with? Is that all knife? I think I'm beginning to understand the frankenprey menu more and more. I still have some questions about organs. Like can I mix all of one protein type but different organs? I have pork kidney, brain and uterus. Can I blend these all up and give them when I do the 25% and 50% of the organ meals? I am also going to substitute a half meal of heart with beef tongue for some variety. Emily asked in her thread and I'll read if you answer on hers or mine but chicken or duck feet? Are these good bone in meal OR should I pair them with another muscle meat or another bone in, like the wing? Or not at all? Off to thaw a quail for tomorrow's lunch! I used a cleaver. You can see it in the second picture. I also used some kitchen scissors to cut some of the meatier pieces into smaller pieces. You certainly can mix organs. I usually use chicken or pork liver and then pork kidney/ spleen or brains. I haven't found thymus or pancreas yet, so I don't use that. Mine don't like beef very much, so I use beef as a muscle meat. I think of chicken or duck feet as a treat. Mine don't like it though, so I offer it and they stash it. Wynstan is all about stashing his treasures in Paul's shoes and we have found chicken feet in his shoes. I thought that was hysterical, but Paul didn't. I'm tagging gfountain. Hers like chicken feet and I want to see if she uses it as a meal.

I can't remember who does it but someone on here does a "gravy" of organs and she puts it on slices of hearts. I like this idea because I can use a different parts with many different organs to mimic a more natural diet. Just a thought though. I do this and I think some others do also. My first organ meal of Liver plus another organ is always just a soup. Hurricanekatt taught me this. It's nice to have them use to doing a soup. If someone gets sick, it's easier to get them to eat soup. You know how good soup is when you are sick. My second organ meal with a half meal of Heart is always slices of Heart, liver and the other organ. Then I puree some Heart, and the other two organs and make a gravy of it. I pour it over the organs. I also add just a little (1/2 tsp) of Bone meal powder. They don't notice it and Mika is a lazy bone eater and I like to get bone into her. Wynstan doesn't like soup very much. I use to do two plates, one with soup and one with organ slices, but he's better about the soup now. So, I find that they eat very well with a gravy over their organs.

Chicken feet in shoes in hilarious! If the ferts don't eat them then I will make some all natural dog treats using the feet. I'm sure they will love it. Well I whacked up a quail with a cleaver. It, uh, didn't go so well but better than I thought it would. Rebel keeps wanting to stash it but I got a few pieces into her and she is crunching the bone like a good girl! Riot was a stubborn little butt. He promptly spit on every piece I got in his mouth. He ate one decent sized piece and then kind of chewed on another one and now he's pouting because he doesn't get yummy soup. I don't even know. He did chew on some of the bone too. I'm leaving it out for them and will try every hour today to feed them pieces. If they haven't eaten anymore by dinner time, I'll try adding some soup gravy and see if that will entice them to eat. If they still don't like it, then it's soup and chunks for bed time 'snack' and I know Riot and Rebel will eat jerkified chicken pieces so I'll collect those and put them in their cage.

Well today went okay. I chopped up a quail added an ounce of 'gravy' to it. They were being really difficult so I'm not sure who ate what. But I know Rebel had 1 oz this morning and Riot had about 1.5 oz. Morning meal was soup and chunks. They ate together on the quail about 2 oz. I would say Rebel only ate .5 oz ish. She would eat a couple chunks here and there but by tonight she decided to chomp down on my arm to let me know she was done. So I let her go and didn't force her to eat anymore. Riot did much better than at lunch. He sat and just ate. He has some problems chewing on the right side of his mouth. I'll get a better look in the morning when I have light and can see better. Tomorrow morning is chunks with gravy again and then bone in at night.
Should I stick with quail for a minute or can I give CGH?

Sorry, feet are a treat or a bone snack with a meat meal, they're not a meal on it's own. Too much bone. I like the chicken feet in the shoes too ciao

Perfect! They can enjoy them as snacks or treats and the dogs can have some too.

Would stick with Quail for at least a week or so, to get them to where they eat it fairly well. It's best to stick with one protein at a time, going too fast means if one shows a sign of allergies you won't know for sure which protein it is.

Okay, weird question, How do I stick with quail for a week? That's a lot of bone in and they are only eating a little 'gravy' on top. This isn't enough organs or muscle meats for them for the week. Also, that's 14 meals of quail, that is a lot of quail for the week and very expensive.

Also, I am going to keep better track of what each of them eats at each meal. BreakfastChicken soupie with chicken chunksRebel ate 1.9oz of breakfast. Riot ate 1.4oz of breakfast. Riot is doing this thing where he makes the chewing noises with nothing in his mouth because he thinks it will get him put down. It took me a second to realize what he was doing since the chicken was still on my finger. Too smart they are. Thursday weigh in Riot - 2lbs 2.2oz (gained 2 ozs!) Rebel - 1lbs 11.9 oz (It says she gained 11 ozs! I'm not sure if that is true or not. But I double checked my scale. She is predinisolone.) Rebel will not stay still for a top down photo and she doesn't like oil so there is no making her stay still. I'll try again when she is eating.

Rebel and Riot look good in their photos. Riot looks a little thin, but it could be the angle of the photo.
Riot is too smart. The little one is playing you.
Since they don't eat alot, try cutting the Quail in half. Smash half of it up well and then put the gravy on top. You will want to hand feed them to encourage them. Try doing it for the next four meals, since a week is too much for you. Four meals won't cause an imbalance and will save you some money.
Prednisolone will put some weight on them and give them a little Pred belly. That might account for the weight gain. You said you double checked your scale. Try putting a can on it. Check the weight of the can versus what your scale says.

Yeah sorry about the bad angle on Riot. He's always looked skinnier to me. I'm glad he's putting on weight though. I'll keep an eye on his waistline and weight. Also, he's still losing some hair from his adrenal so I think that makes him look skinnier too. I weighed a pound of marshmallows. Came out to a pound. Scale is good. It might be the fact that she refuses to sit still for longer than two seconds to get a good weight on her. Awesome, I'll continue with the quail. I can do it for a little while, I just only have 11 quail after last night and the Asian store is two hour round trip so I need to make it count the next time I go. Oh and poops look like good bone poops, slightly more solid than their soup poops. Still pretty dark though.

To take ferret weights, I use a clear, lidded plastic container (the kind where the lid locks down) that is large enough to comfortably fit each ferret one at a time. I set the container (with lid) on the scale, tare the weight, put the ferret in the container, put the lid on and set it on the scale. They may shift around a little but this keeps them still for long enough to get a clear and reliable reading. My ferrets don't seem to mind it, but if your ferrets get mad at you for boxing them in for a few seconds you can reward them with a couple drops of oil for putting up with it. They should soon associate weigh in as a good thing.

It sounds like your scale is well calibrated. That's good. I have a flat pet scale, so I just place a few drops of oil on it. They lick the oil and it gives me enough time to catch their weight. Poops are going to be funky during a switch. All colors, shapes and forms. Darker poops usually seem to come from organ meals, as you know. Don't over worry about poops, but do keep an eye out on them. Looser poops need a little more eggshell or bone, firmer a little less. Each ferret is different. I just reread your switching thread, to see if I missed anything. Never heard that ferrets can't throw up, that's really weird. They certainly can throw up and do sometimes. Sometimes, they just eat too fast. Any time they throw up, it's always going to scare a ferrent, especially a new ferret. Another note to add about me. I am allergic to raw chicken liver.
How are you doing with the raw liver? Is it still bothering you? You're doing so well. Give the little ones a big Hug from me.
