So, as many of you know, I'm adopting a ferret (possibly two). While talking to the current ferrent, she told me that the adoption fee will cover basically everything she already has for her ferret. This is cool. However, she started listing things, and one of the things she listed was a "spray that neutralizes their urine" that you add to their water. That can't be good for them...can it? Or is this something totally normal that everyone uses and I just had no idea? I was planning to feed them raw and just deal with whatever funny smells there are. (I own or have owned so many animals that nothing surprises me anymore or bothers me.) Should I be worried about side effects this bizarre sounding spray may have caused?
Edit: I'm not really sure this belongs in this subforum, but since I'm worried about the spray affecting the health of my ferret-to-be I guess it does? If it clearly belongs somewhere else, please feel free to move it!

I wouldn't add anything into their water besides changing it out frequently and cleaning with soap if it has food bits inside it.

I'd be wary of that. If it isn't natural it isn't for them.

It's probably the stuff that Marshall sells. I think it's called "Goodbye Odor" or something. I'm not sure of side effects or ingredients though.

Their urine doesn't smell, it's their stool more than anything. And on raw you can barely smell them at all. Detox is the worst, then it gets better.
I wouldn't use it, if it isn't completely 100% natural such as an herb, and even then be wary of it.

I don't plan on using it. I'm just worried it may have harmed them. We don't know of any negative side effects right? That's my biggest worry.

It probably hasn't caused damage to where it would be a problem, but it's something we will never know.

I use natures miracle for cleaning and neutralizing urine. I always make sure it is completely dried before letting ferrets near it. I don't trust what is in it to let the ferrets come into direct contact to it.
But is works really well with stains prevention and neutralizing smells on carpet and tile.

What do you guys use for cleaning potty stains on carpet and then jerkeyfied food on wood?
I ended up cleaning hardwood floors with lemon Lysol (probably bad but all I had) after removing a bunch of dried up food under the bed. I then let the window open to air it out a bit and poured water on the floor before wiping it down again with a few towels.
For carpet I usually use this pet safe stain remover from target that has a purple label.

Thank you for the replies everyone!
And ferretbrah, I'm curious about good cleaners too. =] Msav mentioned "Nature's Miracle" which I already know works great with dog and cat accidents, so I would assume it would work well with ferrets too, but I'm interested to see!

Mine are 5-6 yrs. they go on paper or on the outdoor patio (enclosed). They have had accidents on the carpet but didn't have any problem with neutralizing any odor. All I use is a little soap & water, sometimes a touch of bleach but rinse area well. (and depends on material (for using any amount of bleach)but you know that) I don't notice any urine odor, sometimes the poop but not bad to me, I'd much rather clean up their poop than a cat litter box. Congratulations on new ferret kids

Haha thank you! =] I figure they can't be that bad compared to the 6 cats my family used to own. Lol. Talk about a pain to clean! And stinky too! I thought it was the weirdest thing I'd ever heard of that she used something in their water...so weird. The poor little ones

They have a natures miracle "just for ferrets" I think it has a higher concentration of enzymes. It worked much better on the urine smell than the dog or cat one. However since I switched My ferrets to raw their urine does not smell as bad so I have moved to the dog one since it is a lot less expensive than the ferret one. I still have some of the ferret one for liver days. That is the only time their urine smells really bad now.

i use the ever popular vinegar/water mixture, i have a bunny and if you have ever had a rabbit you know bunny pee pee is the most difficult pee to ever clean, and vinegar water works great, for the ferrets i just let it sit on the stuck on poos for a few min and it comes right up, I literally use it to clean every cage/ litter box in the house and it takes the smells away and is good to use on carpet accidents not to mention cheap cheap cheap!
