Why are boy ferretss so frequently(?) mis-sexed as girls?
When I was younger we had three ferrets. The first- we called Mary- was supposedly a girl but when my parents gave 'her' and 'her' brothers[cagemates] away, they learned she was actually a he! While they were in there, another person came in with his 'girl' ferret who was also a boy(which makes sense, honestly; Mary was way bigger than his brothers)! He had been blowing on his ferret's 'bellybutton' :T Ew.
Not to mention the several other stories of girls turning out to be boys(and people blowing on ferret 'bellybuttons"!).
What's up with that? (Bonus points for sharing your mis-sexing stories!)

LOL, I think it seems pretty obvious but some people just don't know. I know have any stories about mis-sexing ferrets, but I do about Guinea Pigs! When I was little (7-8) we wanted Guinea Pigs, and we went to the pet store and got supposedly two boys, one always had a little mohawk on it's head and the other a smooth coat, and the people from the store said they were sure they were both boys, so we took them home and a while passed and we looked in the cage one Sunday morning and there were a bunch of babies everywhere, I was excited but I mean, come on, what 8 year old wouldn't be excited? Lol. So we would keep two babies and gave the parents and rest of the litter to some friends of ours I think, and the pet store promised those babies were both girls. Nope. Another litter. Yeah, they had MORE babies, We repeated what we did before and decided no more GP's after that. And that starts the story of how we got birds... hahahaha

The little girl that I got Gizmo from told me that gizmo was a boy. Needless to say when I got her at almost two years old she was a she not a he. Also when I got Tinkerbell she was a tiny little thing and I knew the second I saw her that she was a girl. The had her for over a month and didn't know she was a Lil girl. I picked her up and showed the employee how to sex ferrets.she didn't know how to sex them. No one had ever shown her. I guess they just assumed she knew what she was doing. Who really knows.

Perhaps not knowing about the "belly button", people look further down, and there's obviously nothing there to see? And girl parts aren't as obvious? I have no idea, but I'm hoping that one day I'll get to say, "That's not a belly button. That's a boy." For some reason that sentence makes me laugh. Maybe it's the alliteration

I don't know how it gets messed up so often but I do have an idea. I've seen a number of pet stores totally screw it up....but...it doesn't help when the pet stores are relying on their paperwork. I was in a pet store and the clerk was busy telling this woman about this gorgeous little girl that she was holding and how they make such wonderful pets. My son who's a special child and never learned to speak until he was about 5 yrs old (so still had a problem with "inside" voice), was watching the spiel being put on by the sales woman. It was at that point that the lady blew a raspberry on the ferret's belly. My son started to giggle. The woman turned to him and said something the effect that did he remember what it was like to get raspberries from his momma. With a totally horrified expression he informed the lady that he'd never been given raspberries like that as that was the ferret's penis and not his belly button. This resulted in expressions of total confusion and the clerk telling him he was a naughty boy and shouldn't talk like that. At that point I had to step in as the clerk was informing him that this was a girl ferret and he was arguing that it was not it was a boy ferret because it had a belly button and he should know he had 18 ferrets in his house. When I told the clerk that this was correct that the ferret she was holding was indeed a male, she said it couldn't possibly be because the paper work said female. Sure enough the paperwork did indeed say female. So this might indeed be where some of the mistakes are coming from. ciao

Several years ago, two of my mom's gerbils were supposed to be boys, but one of them gave birth to a few cute little babies. It was funny because they had a set up of two 10 gallon aquariums connected by a large set of plastic tubes and the mother would carry the babies from one aquarium to the other.

@julesalot OMG! I can’t even imagine! Don’t they pop out p much fully developed, too? Blue I’d love to see the look on someone’s face when boyhood is pointed out! Especially if they’d been blowing raspberries. Heather I CAN’T EVEN IMAGINE THAT Holy coW, That could explain it, though! But t’s kinda silly to strictly off paperwork, I think! I’m sure it’s easy to lose track of who’s who in ferrets. raynebc Oh noooooo!!! I can’t imagine how cute that would have been!! I love gerbils so much ;w; jflksajfla!!

I don't know why, but my Yogi was thought to be a girl, until I adopted him at 4 years old. He had the name Sophia that whole time. I also got one female ferret from someone who told me she was male. I believed that and didn't even realize until 2 weeks later that she didn't have the 'belly button.' I think the pet store had told the owners that she was male and they believed it

I had that same thing happen to me. I ended up with 10 babies because they have three litters(one only had two babies and both died). It was a fun experience though. Gerbils are such great pets
