Hey there! Newbie here! Just got my first 2 ferrets about 2 months ago and am not happy with ingredients in kibble food. I have been researching and planning on switching them to a whole prey/raw combo diet. they have not had any of either at this point, but they are only 3 months old, so i am hoping they will take fairly easily. i am hoping to apply for the mentoring program and get some help with the switch, but in the meantime, i am trying to workout my monthly costs, menu, etc to make sure it is feasible for my partner and I.
I was wondering if i could get some feedback on a tentative meal plan i worked up (i know in the beginning i probably will do soups and other things, but i want to make sure i am at least on the right track with proportions, protein sources, etc.). Any advice/critique is appreciated!
So i have 2 males that are 3 months old. they are my firsts, so i have no clue if they are big/small for their age. they are active, but get good sleep as well. overall i do not love the look of their coat, and one seems a tad underweight to me. I have read adult males should each eat 3-5oz/day, but when they are kits that amount can double. does that sound correct?
Asuming it is, 1 meal would be approx 4oz per ferret. If i gave them 2 meals/day, they would each eat 8oz/day. Weekly that would mean (if i calculated correctly based on the 3/5oz/day) they would get 28-36oz of consumable bone, 12-16oz muscle meat and 4-8oz of liver/organ mix. How am i doin?
i also calculated a monthly total for both ferrets (since heart was so important, i separated it from muscle meat, just for my own clarifications):
224-288oz (14-18lbs) consumable bone
48-64oz (3-4lbs) muscle meat (excluding heart)
48-64oz (3-4lbs) heart
16-32oz (1-2lbs) liver
16-32oz (1-2lbs) other organ
total oz: 352-480 total lbs: 22-30
do those numbers look correct?
Based on those numbers (so if they are wrong, i will adjust) i also made a 4 week menu. i made the menu based on items i could either get locally or found for a good price on hare-today. please give me your feedback!
Week 1 & 3:
Cons. Bone (4lbs):
2 lbs chicken
1 lb mice
1 lb quail
Muscle Meat (1lb):
.5lb pork
.5lb chicken
Heart (1lb): turkey
Liver (.5lb): pork
Other Organ (.5lb): beef kidney
Week 2 & 4 (same amounts apply):
Cons. Bone:
duck (2lbs)
quail (1lb)
rabbit (1lb)
Muscle Meat:
pork (.5lb)
chicken (.5lb)
Heart:
chicken
Liver: pork
Other Organ: beef kidney
so how did i do? was i correct in reading that the consumable bone part of the diet could be the whole prey? I hope this is not the longest or most silly post you ahve ever seen. i know i definitely need the mentor, lol (giggle)
Thanks in advance for any feedback, my boys, Badger and Weasel, will thank you!
