So i have been feeding my ferret raw along with dry ferret food for some time now and have never had any problems. My ferret, Cashew is a 10 month old unneutered male ferret (I.e. Hob)
However. Cashew has become so aggressive lately. He has this random moments where he goes completely spastic and tries to bite my feet or hands. If I try to run he becomes even more enthused like he's chasing live prey and the bites turn harder. This is nothing like how he plays. He is serious and if I don't pin him down, he will in fact draw blood.
He is now also refusing any ferret food and will only eat meat, dog or cat food. Additionally, he will lock his teeth around my fingers or lunge at them if I pull them away and drag me all the way to his hidey hole where he will begin chew on them with significant strength even using his back teeth. I think he may be extremely hungry even though he has ferret food available.. I can live him up by his teeth with my index finger he has his jaws in! It hurts a lot and I need both hands to pry his mouth open.
Can somebody tell me what's wrong with him? I think he's trying to eat me.. Please help me. I don't ever want to be fearful of cashew or for anyone to be hurt because of him. I love him so much.

I am not starving him. He has eaten ferret food fine in the past. Except I had been giving him more cat food and switched back to ferret food when I managed to buy some. He eats it sometimes and sometimes not that much. Even if he is hungry he should never attempt to eat me. I've had him since he was 7 weeks. Shouldn't he have at least some loyalty to me? Some more info. I think he may also be in rut, his genitals appear swollen, his balls have set in and turned yellowish and his more oily.. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE

I don't have any information concerning the fact that he is intact, I suppose he could be in season, I think hobs can possibly get aggressive in season? Someone will correct me.
He's not trying to eat you, he doesn't know better. When he bites you, scruff him and drag him across the floor, and put him up like play time is over. When he bites your feet do the same, don't run, he thinks it's a fun game and likes it, when you run you encourage him. I'm surprised when you say he draws blood, most ferrets don't bite that hard. I know a few people on here have had or have intact ferrets, so we'll hope they have something to say.

I'm not really sure how to reply to other users on this forum.. D: But Cashew does know what he's doing and he does know better He knows my pain tolerance as I have been scruffing him when he used to bite when he was younger and since then, he's gotten so much gentler and has only bitten in play. But now it's started up again :/ he's full on gnawing on my fingers. He specifically targets bare feet and unprotected hands and is h*ll bent at attacking and biting them This is so unlike him. He has never been so aggressive When he was younger, if he was feeling playful he would only attack feet with socks as he knows it hurts less or softly nip at hands..I'm starting to feel so convinced he's trying to eat me. His whole body language displays this fact. Definitely wishing somebody could prove me wrong

Not sure when jobs go into season but that deeeefinitely sounds like horny teenage male to me I know that there's an implant (the des implant?) that helps keep the hormones in check. You should contact Heather or Mikeybox, they both have hobs.

The grabbing and dragging sounds a lot like mating behavior. Ferrets aren't so great with the romance. If you click 'search' at the upper right you should be able to find Mikeybox's profile and peruse his posts about Finn, his unaltered hob.

Another indicator of being in season would be peeing everywhere and/or dragging his belly on everything while peeing. Charming gentlemen

Your Cashew is an intact Hob, right? I'm going to tag Heather. She has intact Hobs and should be able to offer some advice. It sounds to me like he is going thru puberty and he has chosen you as his girlfriend. That doesn't make it any easier and I have never had an intact Hob, so let's see what she says. We have other ferrents on the forum, who should be able to help also.

Haha...welcome to the world of naughty hobs and you've been chosen. The rest are right...you're his and he's being a brat. Teach him about the "sin bin". One....feed him his raw diet, he will be less likely to think of you as meat. Lots of nice meaty bones to vent his frustration on. If he eats meats why feed cat and ferret kibbles?! Two...the brat is in puberty and he's testing you. The further he goes into rut the more hobnoxious he's going to get. It's not uncommon for their first season for the "rush" to take them and they grab you and won't let go. Relax, don't move. He may try and drag you off, just pick him up and gently remove him. He's not himself and he's not in control, that's the problem. It's all hormones and yes, he's very aggressive...just remember he's not himself and once he's finished his season and everything tucks up at the end of the season, you will get your loving boy back. Take heart the first season is the worst. They're over the top brats and the way they talk is through their teeth. Are you in Australia? ciao

The chewing says otherwise haha :') do male ferrets also chew on females when trying to mate? I know he does with his food sometimes :S Dragging it away to eat in peace and solitude and away from anyone looking to steal it D: Oh yep!! He does pee everywhere and drag his body across surfaces.. Cashew isn't like most ferrets cos most ferrets are nice and awesome He's a special breed of vicious I don't know what else he could be doing but trying to eat me :C Thanks racheld I'm reading Mickeybox's threads now

But I wonder if he'd be the same neutered D: what if he acquired a liking for all flesh T__T Because what he's doing doesn't seem typical of intact hobs chewing on his human? Very peculiar :S

I've been doing the opposite :3 ;giving him ferret kibble and nothing else. There's this myth going around feeding a dog meat will turn it bloodthirsty Cashew got aggressive so I started having doubts and took raw meat off the menu altogether Is it normal for them to lick and chew hard on a human's hand though? I sure hope he'll return to his former self thanks so much for the help and yes I do live in Australia

I'm not clued up on the subject of ferrets at all but I have been told by my mums cousin the following... When they had Ferrets they were in a hutch outside, a rabbit hutch style with an upstairs and a downstairs, When the hob got "horny" he would grab a Jill and drag her upstairs to the "bedroom' and have his way! The Jill sounded as though she was being "raped" its a very rough unloving vocal affair....
Going by what everyone has already mentioned and how rough he is being to you, to me it sounds like he's in season/horny or whatever else you'd like to call it...
I've got all of this to look forward to, Percy my hob is only 20 weeks old and due to become sexually mature in March.

That's ferret love lol....rough and ready. I watched my wee jill, Lola get caught in the living room. Tico has his love nest in my art studio, so I watched her get dragged across the living room floor, down the hallway and under the sofa. Tico is considered to be a very gentle hob, he never marks his lovers....but that's still caveman sex in the highest term of the word. Of course I've also seen what happens when he makes unwanted advances too....the wee jills give much better than they take and can have a hob screaming momma in less than 5 minutes. No, you're getting love bites unfortunately. I'm presently dealing with Radagast who is 22 weeks and figures he's a lady's man now. Yah, right...got his butt handed to him by his sisters but he still didn't learn and bites way too hard on his human :face: He's learning but you're not going to get much of a response in a young hob who's going through his first year of hormones. They're not only disgusting they're really rough. Teach him manners when he's being handled by you Raw meat = vicious= urban legend...garbage ciao
