My ferret is straining to urinate, at least I assume the strain is from urinating as he always goes pee and poop at the same time. I already have a vet appointment for him tomorrow at 4:20. So I was just looking for any tips or tests/xrays I should have done. A little background info on him he is approx. 6 years old. He has both adrenal and insulinoma. He takes pred for the insulinoma and I he has been given both a deslorelin implant and melatonin implant for the adrenal. He received both of those implants back in March. I'm now trying to find a vet that has any des implants on hand since there are on back order and my vet doesn't have any in stock. In August I began working with a mentor on here to switch him over to a raw food diet and off of kibble. He is now at a point where he is only eating the raw soup that I add a little chicken baby food to, but he is not eating kibble. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Adrenal can cause prostrate issues or it could be stones. Prostrate would be my guess since he is off kibble now. Good luck and keep us updated.

I'd guess enlarged prostate gland as well. I haven't had a ferret with that problem yet, so I'm not sure what the vet will recommend to treat it. All of the males with adrenal I've had were still peeing when they passed.

How can you tell he's straining to pee?

He will back into the litter box and not go and will keep doing this. Sometimes they actually make noises if it's painful enough. Whether it's prostate or stones vetting must be done ASAP.....you've got next to no time to react. This is an emergency. ciao

He goes to the bathroom. Years ago I had a ferret that had a blockage in his penis and kept going to the litter box and trying to go. This ferret isn't doing this. He goes to the pee. I have litter boxes in his area along with puppy pads. He primarily uses the puppy pads. So I can see that he's gone pee. And I hear him go. But I also hear him make a noise like he's straining to do so. He's not making a sound like he's crying in pain, but more similar to the noise like if you cuddle and squeeze them a bit. And in the middle of the night I hear him and it wakes me. He will go around every 3 hours. But during the day he can go much longer without peeing.
But can anyone tell me what tests to expect to check if it's stones or his prostate?

Surgery for stones. Prostate medications and catheterization until his prostate is down enough to go. I am going to assume he is actually still voiding, and not completely blocked up?

No he's not backed up. I can just hear him staining. I had to collect urine and feces samples from him to take into the vet today. I collected them during the night when I would hear him get up out of bed. One of the 4 times he got up all he did was poop and he was even straining to do that.
I just worried at his age he won't do well in surgery. My first ferret died on the operating table. Literally his heart stopped and I watched them giving him mouth to mouth. Then my next ferret she made it through surgery but literally took her last breath in my arms.

I'm not fond of surgery either but sometimes the risk must be met or the only other solution is to euthanize. It's just a sad fact of being owned by ferrets. You don't explicitly state an age or at least I didn't see one? Is he adrenal? A swollen prostate is often a side effect of adrenal and can be treated with drugs and sometimes these can be weaned off if it responds to the lupron or DES ciao

He is approx. 6 years old. His exact age is unknown as he was dropped off at a Humane Society and that was over 3.5 years ago. Yes he also is adrenal which he is has a melatonin implant and des implant for.

If his prostate's giving him problems he may indeed need meds for it. I suggest vetting just to be sure. I had one boy who actually got an infection that affected his prostate. Once he went through his round of antibiotics he was good and we never had an issue again. Good luck, please keep us posted ciao

My vet in Oakdale should still have a Des implant that was for Hammie, I have no need for it now that he is gone. I should be talking to my vet today so I will ask if he still has it.

I'm so sorry for your loss! When you say Oakdale I assume you mean in CA? If so yes I could totally use it? Any way while you're talking to your vet if you could see if I could come out there on Saturday?
And thank you!!!

Hello everyone,
Just an update from the vet visit today. I took in his urine and poop sample. His urine didn't have any crystals in it. But his poop was a bit a gel-ish. My vet said it looked like diarrhea. She also took some X-rays. He does not have any stones and she said everything looks good. She prescribed some meds for his diarrhea especially since one time last night that he was straining all he did was poop. I'm going to give him the new prescribed meds and take it from there. I'll see how he does for a few days.

My guess is that Patricia already notified you via Facebook that the Des is still available. However Dr. Tanner will not be back until the 15th of October. And I would not trust that other vet to touch another one of my ferrets. He is the one I hold responsible for Hammie's cruel passing.
I hope that Frisky recovers. If anyone can find out the cause of his illness it is DR. G
perhaps this is a side effect of Adrenal with the Des wearing off and getting re-implanted may help. I am sure Dr. G will give you the answers though.
