This is no offense to vegetarians, because I know not all people are like this... But yesterday at work, a man asked me for some medium live rats for his snake and I took him to the back because we didn't have any the size he wanted up front. I noticed he had some Kaytee ferret kibble in his hand, so I recommended a raw diet to him and he responded by saying, "I couldn't imagine doing that. You see, I'm a vegetarian." So I said, "Well ferrets are obligate carnivores, they cannot digest plant materials or fruits and vegetables." We talked for a few minutes more about the subject. I guess I should be grateful that he doesn't feed his ferret a vegetarian diet... There is another person who feeds their dog a vegetarian diet because they are vegetarian. I've recommended to that person to get a pet rabbit instead.

I don't get it....he's ok with feeding his snake a life rat but he won't feed it to his ferret?? It baffles me sometimes. If you wouldn't feed kibble to your snake, why would you feed it to your ferret?? ciao

I don't understand either, he was buying live animals for his other pet, but "couldn't imagine" feeding raw to his ferret? Seriously?
Ugh, people these days. More people I meet, the more I just love my ferrets.

Like Heather said, we should just consider ourselves lucky, the ferret isn't dinner. Congratulations on keeping your temper and being so patient.

I bet he was OK with the rat because the snake would eat it whole and he wouldn't have to see the prey's insides. Also, I never heard of a kibble diet marketed to snakes.

What I don't understand about that attitude is that the ferret is eating meat on either diet, so why wouldn't someone choose the diet that's going to give you a healthier ferret? At least with raw you have the option of choosing where the meat comes from, so if he wanted to he could buy from one of the 'kind' farms. Sean and I have talked about only adopting herbivorous animals in the future because neither of us like having a freezer full of corpses, but no way would I let my personal ethics interfere with how I care for Remus or my dogs, and I definitely don't understand people who bring home a carnivorous animal knowing full well they don't intend to feed them a species appropriate diet.

And I definitely don't understand why he would be a squicked about handling raw meat but okay with live feeding, unless maybe his snake is one of the individuals who starve rather than eat pre-killed.

This person isn't typical of all veggies and vegans. I'm under no illusion that my fuzzies need meat and organs and have a responsibility to give them the best I can. I'm vegan, but my fuzzies aren't, so they get all the meat/organs and whole prey they require. It was weird at first, but it's something I have to do. I'm even ok partially skinning guinea pigs nowadays!
Like someone else said, if they don't want to feed their animals meat, then they should get a vegetarian pet like a rabbit!

Since he walks on land would he expect a pet fish to do the same?

I HATE vegetarian dog and cat food. How rediculous! My OH and I are vegetarians, but I breed my own mealworms for the hamsters, buy frozen mice/rats for the snake and feed my dog raw. I believe that my animals need the best diet I can provide and that is what they have, the best that I know of and that they will eat. The same is true for myself and my OH, meat makes me feel sluggish and we don't need it to survive. After a few weeks of being vegetarian I didn't crave meat at all, and now the thought of eating it doesn't appeal to me at all. I don't miss it (except for maybe fast food times) but when I was on a carb free diet I was desperate for any carbs the entire time! I've a really bad sweet tooth but I was dreaming about eating bread! I could have killed someone for a piece of toast even after 8 weeks.

I'm trying to avoid getting into the live rat thing, all I can say is MORON! Why risk your snake and cause the rat stress, terror and potentially a lot of pain. See I'm starting now so I'm going to sit quietly in the corner until I calm down....

I use frozen feeders from a reptile supplier for my ferrets. Really good quality food for ferrets. She thinks it's hilarious. I'm the only ferret person who buys from her but she's really quick to find extra prey types when I ask her for it. That's how I get my guinea pigs. ciao

Ughh I don't get people.... I'm a vegan and my dogs and ferrets are on a raw diet. It's not that hard to do the right thing.

Maybe he didn't know that ferrets were carnivores too? I don't have a problem people eating vegetables only, if that's their choice. Humans are not herbivores. I don't think it's necessarily healthy for them, but hey, it's their body. But when it comes to pets, that's a complete different story. They are at mercy of human owners. Even if he didn't know what ferrets ate, now he knows. He cares enough about his snake to feed its natural food. Hopefully he'll make the right decision for his ferrets too.
