We're battling ear mites again. Last go-round, the vet gave me ivermectin ear drops that cleared them right up - normal dosage, 2 syringes full to give 10 days apart. An aunt came over to feed & play with the fuzzies while I was away this past weekend and now they both have tell-tale ear mite symptoms. Come to find out, her dog is being treated for ear mites. (headwall) So I called the only vet in middle TN who has ivermectin; he said rather than bring them in (3 hour round trip) he'd just prescribe the meds. My mom was in his town at the time, so I had her go by and pick it up. But instead of sending me the ear drops, he sent me injectable ivermectin with instructions to use 1 drop in each ear now, and again in 10 days. (And store the rest of the syringe-ful in the refrigerator for future use.) Does that sound right? I thought with the injectable formula, it had to be mixed with something to be able to use it as ear drops.

It would be hard to get a single drop down deep into a ferret ear. I'd call and ask what and how much to mix it with personally.

I called him back to today to question his instructions and he said that actually it's absorbed through the skin so presumably anywhere on the body would work - one drop per pound of animal. He generally administers it directly into the ear canal for ear mites, so 2 drops for each approximately 2 pound animal. However, if I'm concerned about the dosage and getting ONLY one drop into each ear (and I AM!!), it can be diluted with mineral oil in a 1:3 ratio.

No mineral oil. That stuff is horrid if they ingest it. And worse they can inhale micro droplets causing major respiratory issues

I wondered about that. I thought I remembered reading something about the mineral oil somewhere on the forum, so I guess it's a good thing I haven't had a chance to treat them yet. What about sweet oil to dilute the ivermectin?

Lots of people use olive oil, that should do the trick if all you need to do is dilute it, unless maybe if you need a thinner liquid.
