I have a vet appointment next Wednesday, but I started noticing Puck scratching his left ear/facial area quite a bit lately. My first instinct was possible mites or infection, so I checked his ears. They had a small amount of reddish black wax, so I dropped a bit of my PPP Ferret ear cleaner in, massaged gently, and let him shake it out for a little while before gently cleaning out the excess around the front of his ears. I also smelled his ears, and there was no unusual stink. I have monitored him a bit more, and it's only that left side. He itches it like crazy. There is no swelling, hair loss, or drop in energy levels, but I called the vet anyway and he's getting seen. My question is does anyone have any idea why he might be scratching like this? He does NOT have fleas, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't have mites or an ear infection. If you do have any ideas is there anything you think I could do to HELP him before he sees the vet just to ease his discomfort? Thanks in advanced.

I don't see any obvious problems with them. No broken teeth, no plaque build-up. Gums are a beautiful nice pink. Is there something particular I should look for?

He doesn't have any bedding in his den. He only goes in his den for feedings and if I need to clean. It has T-shirts, and blankets on the bottom (get removed for feedings). He sleeps on his back, no other way, and most of the time in my bed with me. There is no redness, bumps, or swelling. That's why this is worrying me so much. Could it be itchiness from a FOOD allergy?

UPDATE: During play tonight I accidentally put pressure on that side if his face, and he squeaked. This caused me to check that ear again, and he has much more wax. I know better than to clean it out again, but I looked gently down his ear canal... It has quite a bit of wax. Still no stink and the wax is normal color, but it built up fairly quickly. No swelling or redness. Is this an infection?? Should I take him to the Emergency Vet? They don't have an exotic vet, but they still have working KNOWLEDGE of any animal don't they?? I'm really worried at this point...

Friday is a bad time for problems to happen, as many regular vets only work week days. If you don't want to clean the ear out again, a quick trip to the emergency vet would at least ease your mind. If there was anything critical, I would think most vets would be able to discern it. You can always call ahead to ask, but I would think emergency vets in general would at least be willing to examine animals they don't normally treat.

I don't have an answer for you but I am thinking about you guys. Poor little guy. I am guessing even if there is no sign of infection on the outside he could still have a middle or inner ear infection, or a deep build up of wax that is causing pain and pressure on his ear drum.

We're on our way to the Emergency Vet. I'm really worried, so my Aunt is watching the Baby while I go with Puck. I will update as soon as I have an answer

Most expensive mosquito bite ever.... I didn't SEE the bite, but the emergency vet did :/ Sudocreme (I think) after a quick cleaning (he'd scratched it open) with instructions to just keep an eye on it in case of infection. Puck seems proud of himself :/ Better safe than sorry.

Oh my, poor mite. And poor pocket book! But at least you know he apparently has an issue with mosquito bites now. I would talk to your regular vet about a dosage of benadryl to give him for if/when it happens again.
