This is interesting. We have three Petco's by us. The one that is only two miles away never sold ferrets because of the township laws. The other two always have sold them. Today I was in the one browsing around while I was waiting for my daughter. I noticed they didn't have any ferrets there. Not even an empty cage. It bothered me all day so I had to call and ask. They said they don't carry them anymore because they were having problems with them. Now they sell Chinchilla's instead. ( I didn't know chinchilla's were a substitute for ferrets...)I called the third Petco as well and they still sell them. I guess it's a good thing, the less of them available the better. I wonder if other Petco's are doing the same thing.

Where are you located? One of the pet stores I frequent hasn't had ferrets in months and when I asked why, they said there was a shortage of the ferret distemper vaccine and they had decided not to carry them until that was resolved, rather than using the canine distemper vaccine on ferrets as some other stores are doing. But if that were the reason it seems like all local Petcos would have stopped carrying them temporarily.

From what I've noticed from stores that sell ferrets, that even within a chain, they vary a lot. I think it depends on the area and the care the employees give them. The Mr. Pets where my parents buy cat food can barely keep them in stock, but I think its because we live in a ferret-popular area, and people like to support this particular store - most/if not all the employees are ferret people so they have a playpen and give them out of cage time/always keep them in groups etc. Once my mom went in to get food and there was one little guy downstairs on a harness with the employees. My mom asked why and they said it was because they sold his last littermate that day and he was lonely so they had him downstairs to keep him company My mom was SO tempted to take him home as a friend for Rolo but in the end she decided that wasn't such a great idea at the time. This is Canada/BC btw so the closest breeder is in Washington/6-8hour drive each way which is too much for most people. The shelters generally aren't really overflowing with ferrets and singles are exceptionally rare in shelters. That being said, I've been to other locations where they don't stock them because the ferrets don't sell or the employees aren't very comfortable with them.

I'm also in Pa, Butler. Last time I was in the Petcos near me they still had ferrets and seemed to still be getting more in. It could be a decision at that specific store to not carry them anymore. As an example, the Butler store carries chinchillas but the Cranberry store does not.

Maybe the pet store employee I talked to was misinformed. Not exactly uncommon. >.>
