My husband thinks I am absolutely insane but I am SO excited about everything we got today. Anyone else get excited over buying their ferrets food?
I was so worried about finding hearts and organs etc. We don't eat meat, so I don't buy it and I was feeling stressed about being able to find stores that carried what we needed. I was going to order from hare today gone tomorrow but I felt like it was a lot more money than if I could find somewhere local. Then I remembered that, when I was a teenager, the store I used to work in always had meat for really cheap prices. All of the chicken they carry is local, organic and hormone/antibiotic free ( I think I read the hormones can bother ferrets? ) So I went to check it out today. It's a good 40 mins from us, but it's not really THAT bad plus its near walmart.
I DID SO WELL! I got two-three months worth of chicken hearts, livers, feet, wings, necks and gizzards and some various goat and beef meat and organs. I got all of it for $15. Everything was like $1 a package except the wings and thighs but they were only $3. I haven't shut up about it since we left and my husband is looking at me like I've lost my mind.
I measured everything out, packaged it in freezer bags and now it's in the freezer so all that is left is a ferret! I also gave our dogs some chicken feet and they went crazy for them.
We're going this weekend to meet a lady two states away that rescues ferrets with her daughters. She has three little boys we are going to meet. WISH US LUCK!

Wow! That is great.
I'm so glad that I'm not the only insane person when it comes to being excited about pet food. I was over the moon when our usual supplier of Cookie's (our dog) food started selling lamb tripe (he's allergic to beef but loved the tripe before we knew about his allergies). My OH thought I was mental to be excited about his food, and even worse when he realised it was the stuff he thought he had managed to ban because of the smell. Only stopped ordering it because of the allergies haha.
Those prices are amazing! Wish I could pick stuff up that cheap.
Good luck with meeting the boys, I hope you all fall in love with each other although it isn't always an instant connection.

See, that's why the Forum 1s so great. We all can talk as much ferret as we want, and everyone understands. 1 Love go1ng shopp1ng for my four. 1t's also alot of fun, when 1 pull out someth1ng really good (l1ke a s1rlo1n) and my husband says, Oh Boy, steak for d1nner. "Nope, that's for the ferrets, we're hav1ng gr1lled cheese".  Good Luck w1th the boys, 1 hope 1t works out and those l1ttle boys f1nd the1r Lov1ng, Happy and Forever Home. |

I'm slightly different when I come across some new type of meat or stuff that is hard to find. I have chef training so I end up standing their thinking "d*mn, am I buying this for the fuzz or for me?"

Anything that I buy from the supermarket (unless it is something I really wont cook like joints since there are only 2 of us) goes into our freezer so that if we decide to have it, I don't feel like it's contaminated (there is tripe in the other freezer and I'm really funny about smells). It also means that if I decided to feed something which was bought for us my OH wont know haha.
So trying not to be the pushy raw feeder, but giving up. Have you tried your dogs on raw? It is pretty much the same as with ferrets only a little less fatty meat and they don't 'need' hearts but do still enjoy them and I think it is always good to have what ever you can get into their diets.
If only I could find other parts, such as lung, brain ect.

Our youngest dog came to us already on a raw diet but would steal his siblings kibble so at the time (not being educated about raw) I just stopped. When I started researching the ferrets raw diet I also started researching for the dogs. Our oldest senior girl has a lot of health issues that I think the raw diet will actually help. I started switching her and our youngest about two weeks ago without a problem. The middle child refuses to eat anything other than the chicken feet. I don't understand because he literally eats everything (poop included) but he won't touch raw. I'm not giving up though, I'm way more stubborn  |

Also,,mi feed them just the chubs. I'm thinking if I try like a "frank prey" style diet with the dogs the stubborn one might eat it since he liked the feet. I was just worried about finding everything until yesterday.

Often with dogs I find that if one eats something the others want it too. Of course tastes and dislikes do play into it too.
It reminds me of when I was at my mums. I have a staffy cross called Cookie, she has a black lab called Cole. I was out in the garden and got out Cookies tea, a whole mackerel. Cookie got his 'food face' on. He focuses really hard, but waits at a distance until I say 'get it'. Cole however knows Cookie's 'food face' and starts leaping in the air. I offer him one and he quickly changed his mind so I told Cookie to 'get it'. Well as soon as Cookie started eating Cole wanted some. This time he took a bite.
Well what followed had us all rolling around in laughter. He really didn't like it, he shook his head so the bit of fish went flying out and then started wiping his jowls on the grass. When that didn't help he actually started licking the grass while still wiping his face and then tried to stop Cookie eating it too, by head butting him. Cookie being the fish lover he is ignored him and continued to eat while Cole is charging at him while we are trying to grab hold of him to stop him head butting Cookie.
Just to point out these dogs really trust each other and have a very strong bond and Cookie has never shown any food aggression and will leave any food (and even drop something in his mouth) if asked.
Anyway if you made it through my story, don't take it as a no if your dog doesn't like one thing. While I would always say that fish is a great thing for a dog to eat and chicken is a great base we later found out that Cookie was allergic to fish and chicken (along with lots of other stuff) so it can still be done with limited sources.
Also I don't think raw is for everyone, as long as you feed the best that you can that keeps you pet in the best condition you are doing a great job. Cookie can't have any dry food/treats/tinned food because all of them have something in he can't eat so raw or homemade is the only option for us.

Awww haha that's so cute! Our oldest (she's a dobie) is usually the ring leader here and the two little guys ( pug and a mix with pug in him) usually follow her lead but the pug isn't having it this time. I'm thinking he might not like the consistency so I'm going out today to get him some meat with bone in it. In the mean time I'm feeding him his same kibble which is fromm four star grain free. The other two don't touch kibble anymore they love their raw meals. Of course the pug is my problem child  he also refuses to go potty outside if it's raining because he doesn't like to get his feet wet  Also, I'm going to try mackerel! The two who are eating raw LOVE fish but I wasn't sure which to get them. Ty |
