I take my ferrets on walks frequently, usually in their stroller because I take long walks. The other day, I noticed the mosquitoes have gotten horrible. They swarm around the stroller and it's possible for them to get in, and I don't want Mads or Nora to get bitten and be itchy and uncomfortable. My mom suggested just lightly spraying repellent on the outside of the stroller to keep them away (obviously we'd do this a while before we actually put the ferrets in), but I wanted to get your guys' opinion on whether or not you would do this. Also, I'm sure this question will come up...Yes, they both got their Ivermectin injections in January.

There are many all natural mosquito repellents out there, but many are essential oils. I haven't researched any concerning which are toxic to ferrets and which aren't, I can't see all of them being toxic. Finding one that is safe and lightly spraying the coat would be a good test.

Any EO is toxic for both cats and ferrets over time. Their bodies cannot excrete the toxins so there is a build up in the liver and kidneys. Since this takes a few years EO's are considered "safe"

you can treat your ferrets with selamectin. (revolution) This is generally used to treat ear mites in ferrets, also treats flea and ticks, It is also used to prevent heartworm which would be your main concern with the mosquitoes. I don't know if it will keep the mosquitoes off though.

I wonder if one of those clip on mosquito repellents would work? (I can't remember the name...) I think the commercials would say it worked so many feet around you. That would be great because then you won't have to spray anything and then you'll be safe too!

Depends on what is in them. Again- if it is EO's I'd not use it

Thanks, guys! I ended up buying a clip-on mosquito repellent thing and I just wear it hooked on my pants while walking them in the stroller. No EO's, works pretty well

I've read mosquitoes don't like garlic. I tried this around my screen outside, as we live right next to a forest and a park and they become rampant around our door in summer, but they seem to be keeping their distance so far. I guess so long as it's not ingested (I read the controversies on garlic for other means)...but, then you have garlic smell hehe.
How does the clip on repellents work? Aren't they a spritz or something of insect repellent?
