We just left visiting the little ferret girl from craigslist. The man freaked out when Rico started hissing and screaming. I tried to explain that ferrets have to work out a dominance between them but he wasn't having it. After him snatching the little girl up ,threatening to beat Nate, cursing and yelling at us Nate and I just finally left. That was a complete waste of a 2 hour drive. Nate and I are thoroughly disappointed and Rico is really stressed out. I don't want to give up on this. Nate is losing faith. I on the other hand, my faith is getting stronger. It makes me more determined to find a buddy for Rico.
So long story short. That guy was ignorant. I wish we could have gotten the little girl. But we are still looking. I am trying I convince Nate at this very moment not to give up. And poor Rico is stressed out. So we are headed home to figure this out.
I just don't know what to do. But I will not give up.

Oh My. Well, I'm sorry that it did not work out. I hope the little girl finds a good home. At least we know, that her ferrant is trying to make sure that she is safe. He missed a wonderful chance for her, but in his own way, he meant well. I know that alot of people do the meet and greet, I never did. Which was a good thing, because Roamy doesn't meet new friends nicely. What worked for us, was bringing (first) Mika home and then Wynstan. It didn't go well, as you know (I've told this story alot). But, they are all friends now and that worked for us. Good Luck and I hope that someone who needs you, will find you, Nate and Rico.

Have you considered that Rico may not want another friend? That being aside, you probably should have some RR (rescue remedy) to give Rico after his excursions and possibly before he meets someone else. One thing to consider is some ferrets are solo ferrets. I've had a number of them. I've had a couple who had mates/friends until those mates died....then they wanted no other. Pooka was one of my wee girlies who had a lifemate, when Babushka passed on despite all the friends she could have chosen she chose to be solo. The stress she went through when introduced to another ferret caused terrible ulcers. Nasty Ivan was another. He too, had a lifemate refusing to accept any other ferret ever again. Truthfully, it's how ferrets/polecats are....solo only coming together to mate and then going on their separate ways. Over here we keep them as perpetual kits, allowing them the privilege of having "littermates" for all their lives. The thing is that this co-habitation creates stress for the ferret and the ferrants. I was surprised and a little horrified at the pressure that was put on ferrants to get another ferret when their ferrets were solo, never taking into account that maybe the ferrant or the ferret didn't need a friend that their bond was with their people. I wish you luck in finding happiness for Rico....whatever that might be ciao

That's what I told Nate, I would have reacted the same way if another ferret looked like he was going to hurt Rico. Nates just mad he reacted the way he did. We just have a lot of discussing and thinking to do.

He won't even play with the cats anymore. Maybe he does just want to be an only ferret. But I just wish he was a happier only ferret.

I know what Heather is saying, and some of our ferrants have found ferrets that don't want another friend. The only thing is that after having Ponce as an only ferret and then seeing the bonds, that my four have made, I wish Ponce had known that joy.
I think if you do bring someone home, you will have to expect that there will probably be a period of introduction necessary. Rico may react like Roamy and be aggressive for awhile. As you know, it took us two months with Mika and five weeks with Wynstan, before Roamy would accept them. You have also read some of the other ferrants experiences and it can take awhile. Recently several of our forum members have brought home new ferrets and their already established ferrets accepted the newcomers quite easily. Everyone has a different story and opinion.

I am personally with Stef on this one. I think that companionship is a good thing. It is hard though because it may take a while to truly get Rico to accept someone else. These 'trial' runs may not be enough time to know for sure. That makes it hard in many ways, keeping another cage until the new one is accepted, the possibility that he WONT accept it. Are there any rescues around that might be willing to take one back if it didn't work out? I don't envy your situation, but I know you are just trying to do what's best for Rico. Whatever that may end up being... WE ARE HERE FOR YOU!

If you're going to get another one then I would just go get one and bring it home. Deal with the introductions yourself at home. He may just not do well with the first meeting, he may need slower a slower intro.

If you plan to try a meeting again, find someone willing to take it slow. Do a bedding exchange about a week before they meet and have the bedding in the crate on his way there. Then use playpens side by side so that they can see & sniff each other without being able to hurt each other. If things go well at that point allow them to interact. Good luck with the path you chose for you & Rico.
