I guess it depends how hot it gets where your at if you can go without AC or not. In the valley in Northern California you can always count on 3 to 4 days out of the year it reaching 108 - 110 degrees. and at least 15 - 20 days of 100 degrees. There is no other option in my climate that does not involve A\C. I really hope you can manage to keep him cool.

Beth That is basically a swamp cooler. I posted a link to designs for those in the document above. They work but unusually only in dry climates. If you have high heat and high humidity then they don't do much but they definitely are an option.

yes, that is a swamp cooler. Many different designs online. As previously mentioned they are only really effective if the humidity is low. If you are experiencing hot AND humid weather they won't do much to help.

I remember years ago, before I knew anything about ferrets, someone I visited had a beautiful champagne ferret. One day I visited and held the ferret. It was floppy and barely moving. The owner had some excuse that I can't remember now. A day or two later the ferret died. Years later I know why.
It was on the second floor during a heatwave, with no AC.

They claim 6 hours off a gal jug. if that is the case keeping frozen gallon jugs in the freezer and rotating them every 6 hours would work great. Just requires some hands on maintenance. I am thinking of trying this to see if I can reduce my AC costs. I can still leave my ac running and if it does not work then my ac will still kick on over 80. Just need to find the Styrofoam bucket liner. I could probably use my old cooler that I was just about to throw away.

ah I missed that! Never seen one that uses frozen jugs before. Good modification.

That little swamp cooler is a great idea! I am definitely gonna have to show this to my hubby. He is very anti AC. Here in NM for a few months our power bill can get into the $400 mark. It's nuts! Winter it's around $50. This seems like a good compromise :0)

keep meaning to ask, aren't swamps humid? I would have thought so, so find it odd that the swamp coolers don't do well with humidity

I think they are called swamp coolers due to the use of water (ie, they cool things down by evaporation of water and make the space you are cooling more humid as a result).
It's basic physics. Evaporation cooling doesn't work as well in humid conditions. That is why it feels hotter for us when the humidity is high and we can get heat stroke easier. The evaporation of our sweat isn't as effective when we are in high humidity so we get hotter.

Oh, ok, the name just sounded like it came because that was where they were originally used, ie. by people who lived in swamps, like a baseball cap was originally ised for baseball but most of the ones I see have nothing to do with baseball and will never go anywhere near a baseball game but they are still called baseball caps.

It's times like this I am glad I am in the UK. That said our heating bills in winter are not fun!

You guys had quite the heat wave last year though. A number of people in the U.K. lost ferrets last year due to the heat.
