Mine handle drumsticks/thighs fine, but they have been eating raw for a few years, and as such have stronger jaws than a beginner. But yes, that is a good rule of thumb. If the ulu won't handle it, neither will they. However even for bones they can't necessarily eat, like a thigh bone, I will toss it in anyway as some enjoy gnawing on the end of it where the cartiledge is.

So, I got an appointment for the ferret vet on oct 26. That was the first available one. I asked about the DES Implant and the receptionist went and asked the vet then called me back and said the implant wasn't available and hasn't been for a while because of a crop failure or something like that..:is that right? I thought it was available again? I had to make sure they had ferret rabies vaccine in stock too since I'm crossing the border and these ferrets aren't immunized. I hate doing that to indoor ferrets but it would suck to not be able to bring them back into the states. :/
I haven't noticed any more shards in the poop...I got some game hens instead of chicken. Problem though...the chicken hearts our store ordered didn't come in and the next meat shipment isn't for 2 weeks. It was a week ago they had their last heart meal and I'm out of hearts at the house....can they go that long without?? Can I give them something else for taurine?

No, that is not correct. The implants have been available again for quite some time. I would call back and ask them to place an order. If you have trouble, have them contact Ravenwood Vet clinic in Eagle River AK and ask for Dr. Haas (previously Dr. Cuthburt). I would usually get them through her until we came down to WA. Other sources of taurine are beef tongue (which I suspect you don't have access too locally lol) and taurine powder. Even if you give tongue, you should still provide taurine powder. The supplement isn't as good as actual heart meat just like us taking a multivitamin isn't as good of a source as getting those same vitamins through veggies and stuff. (Supplements aren't absorbed as well usually). Dosage is 500mg per ferret per day. I would keep some on hand for the times that you can't get heart. It's pretty inexpensive luckily. www.amazon.com/NOW-Foods-Taurine-500mg-Capsules/dp/B000RMH2C0/ref=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1444366845&sr=1-2&keywords=taurine

I looked through my freezer again after sending that message and found a package of hearts. I had one left. But I ordered the taurine as a backup anyway.
