It must be different in the U.S. (I am assuming that is where you are). Vets in Canada cannot exchange or "split" medications as it would contravene the pharmacy laws. I actually suggested to my Uncle (a vet) that he could order a bunch and be a "hub / source" for Des in Ontario. He told me why it wouldn't work.

The implants are good for a year (actually they're good for about 3 months after that). If you're treating for adrenal, chances are you're going to use 2 within that year, per ferret which is why they're sold as pairs. I redo my guys every 6 months. Even if you're going by Virbac's recommended dosage, you're using it every 9 months, still well within the expiration dates. Part of your costs are going to be the $50 administration fee that is applied to your vet every time they apply to the government to use this product. The DES is not approved so they have to apply to the government every time they place an order and specify to whom the order is being used on. That's why vet's get really antsy about selling it or handing the product off. They're responsible for when, where and how it's used and even on what animal. If you're chemically castrating or using it as a preventative then you're only going to use 1 per year. My vet applied to use the product for research so I have the product available almost all the time. What I do find rather annoying is that since we now can order it from the US distributor (originally the Canadian government would not allow us to order from Virbac) instead of Peptec in Australia, it costs me more. ciao

My vet has sold a couple of implants to vets who have clients in immediate need who are waiting for their implants. As this is no longer necessary (shipping from the US a week to 10 days) she probably won't do it any more. ciao

Jaffa finally got his implant today. It was either a dull needle (it's huge) or he has some really tough skin (he does) but she really had to shoe to get it in. Jaffa took it like the big dude he is and didn't attack the vet or the tech. A dab of dermabond and a piece of NBone and it's all good.
I sit here kicking myself in the butt again because I didn't get a pic of the stinkin needle or procedure. And irony of ironies, the vet says they have someone else coming in next week for one, after all that hassle to find one. but the other vet where this one came from said they'd take it.

His fur has filled in a bit since his melatonin implant last month, but his tail still looks like this. The tip is visible too And this is our hero tonight, no worse for wear. You can see the tip of his tail

So Jaffa got his des implant March 24. He had a melatonin implant 3 weeks prior. It appeared, as stated above, that he was getting some fur back on his back, but his tail was still thin. He had a bath for fleas 2 days ago. Today, he looked like this We just used regular shampoo, not flea shampoo. I guess it's time for another melatonin implant. I'm not impressed with the des so far. Poppy was less than half his size and I didn't see remarkable results on her either for 6 months. But Kahlua got her last one in Canada, imported from Australia, 3 years ago and she looked great for 2 years until she passed. What's up?

So are you going to re-implant him now...considering the date, it's probably close. I have to admit when I implanted Lady "B" I wasn't impressed and was debating about getting her the second implant 6 months later. I'm glad I did....the second one was the one that made the difference. I think sometimes it depends on the severity and type of adrenal tumours we're fighting. The DES like the lupron will not react well to malignant tumours. I found that the improvement with the first DES was appetite and activity levels, when I used the second 6 months later that's when I started to see weight gains and coat improvement (I always use melatonin as a secondary treatment with the DES) ciao

If I could get lupron around here we would have got him that with the des. We're thinking about another des in a month or two. He'll be getting a melatonin soon. We have those on hand. But he had one only 3 weeks before the des. He hasn't had one since as we wanted to see how the des did. We can get melatonin implants cheap from a friend and I inject them myself.

Here's hoping the melatonin can help Jaffa with his balding bum

Just got off the phone with my vet. Lupron is out. She talked to a vet in MARYLAND, 800 miles away, that has enough demand to keep it on hand, but they won't ship it here because it has to be compounded and used within 48 hours. And it's $900 for 18-20 doses. At least she's trying.

This morning we saw Jaffa staring and rocking back and forth on his feet like he was retching, so we tested his BG and he was at 38. This totally sucks. He and Alice are 4 months apart in age (both are 5 years old). Alice will be 6 in December, Jaffa turned 5 in May. I've not known a ferret to go 2 years on pred, with insulinoma, so it's doubtful either will make it to 8. They most likely won't even see 7.
