It just struck me that about 2 weeks ago I called our vet for a refill for Boodles' Metacam. Originally, it was in a bottle and we syringed each dose. This time, it was in 3 syringes. It was supposed to be a 21 day supply, but the vet tech not only mixed the wrong concentration, but put a week's worth into each syringe. When I saw it, I asked why the H it was $22 for 3 doses. Metacam is an NSAID and that high a dose would have destroyed Boo's liver for sure. This is at the office of a vet that I trusted with my ferrets in the past, when I first got them. BE VERY DILLIGENT WITH MEDS!

So Lily didn't die from an overdose of antibiotics. She had a VERY rare condition. Never would have even thought to look for something like it. She had a bile duct obstruction. I've never even heard of it. It's called cholestasis. Basically it is caused by a blockage in the gallbladder from gallstones. Not producing enough bile to help digest her food properly, her blood sugar got lower and lower. She got weaker and weaker. But based on her symptoms, it looked like helicobacter. But this disease can cause ulcers in the mouth and throat, painful abdomen, obviously lack of nutrition, jaundice, anorexia. I don't know much about it, but I am going to sit down with my vet and talk about it. She never would have survived the surgery to correct it. She was just too sick.

Oh Katirhi I have heard of that with humans, but not with ferrets. Of course neither you nor your vet would have thought of checking for that! At least you know it wasn't anything you did or didn't do. (((hugs)))

We can hope that maybe thru Lily, your vet will now have the education and experience that might save some other little one with that condition. And I hope this will ease some of the grief that you have had to live with. All my best wishes!

I'm sorry. So hard but you cannot kick yourself for not finding this. There are so many weird things that can go wrong with these little ones. Like Sherry, I'd heard of it in humans but have never heard of it in ferrets. ciao
