Hello, after so many months we finally found a good vet and my 4 year old ferret was diagnosed with kidney disease, the vet said that it is not failure and his kidneys are not that bad.we are going to continue with the treatment probably a diet change ,royal canine for cats for renal disease, fluids and stuff.i am not going to try raw food, cause he has been on raw food 2 to 3 years now and i am not seeing any improvement.the ultrasound showed a cyst like thing on the left kidney only and we are suspecting with my vet that this may be a tumor on the adrenal gland or a cyst,so we are going to proceed with the suprelorin implant also,in case he is having adrenal disease, even though he is not displaying signs.i cant help but feel guilty about my poor ferret, what did i do wrong?he was on a raw food he had his walks toys and everything,do u think that raw food caused this?cause sometimes i was giving him more chicken liver and hearts than normal(2 to3 times a week)he had been also 3 months in prednisolone for his ibd,do u think that prednisolone had an impact on his kidneys.?are there available alternative treatments or support for kidney disease?thanks for your time!

I don't think the raw diet had anything to do with this. These diseases that you talk of are just part of ferret ownership...unfortunately. The extra hearts would do nothing, except give some added taurine, the liver was an overdose but you would loose fur long before you would do damage. Pred will cause liver and kidney damage but he was only on this for 3 months...I've had ferrets on pred for years and they've not died from kidney issues. The adrenal...the only way to avoid that is to not alter. You may actually start to see an improvement once you start to treat the adrenal. This is something I mentioned to you when adrenal was suggested before ciao

I would personally stick with the raw diet.. Do your research on Royal Canin. It really is not a good kibble, and switching to a kibble may potentially increase the chances of getting insulinoma. Ontop of that, It may be pretty stressful for him to all of a sudden switch to a completely different diet. Given what you and he are dealing with right now, I would try to make things the least stressful as possible.

This little one has been off raw for a while. And the Royal Canin(as much as I hate to say this) is better than the food the other vet had him on. With kibble and kidney disease you can't use a high protein, unfortunately. With adrenal treatment he *may* improve. If his problems are triggered by, or exacerbated by, adrenal disease. It's NOT a magic fix for everything however.

It can really vary. And I'm sorry but yes it is ultimately. I've not dealt with it myself so cannot be certain about prognosis.

Hello guys,i contacted with the vet today and he told me that he is going to prescribe me a medication to prevent further damage to the kidneys and he is going to teach me how to give him subcutaneous fluids at home.i asked him about the diet also(royal canine special dry) and he told me that he is going to be temporary on this diet and if i want to i can continue to give him also raw meat(lamb).what do you think?i am really confused,we also said that we are going to implant him with suprelorin in a few weeks,we want to start with the kidney disease treatment first.
