I've decided to feed a diet consisting of primarily ground meats from Hare Today. I just want to know if my order would be balanced as I would like you try to avoid purchasing additional items until the order runs out. This means I need to make sure I have enough organs and bones along with the whole grinds (meat/bone/organ) to last 3.5 months. This is my current order... 5 lbs turkey grind (15-20% bone) 5 lb beef grind (7% bone) 5 lb duck grind (15-20% bone) 5 lb pork grind (10-15% bone) 1 lb ground chicken organs 1 lb rabbit organs 2 lb duck feet 2 lb chicken necks 1 lb duck hearts
I had sent the owner an email requesting further information on percentages in the grinds, but all she really gave me was info on the bone percentage. So I will be assuming the organ percentage is likely 5%, which is why I'm including additional organ mixes. I'm just not sure if I need to buy more or if I need to buy specific organs. The mixes are 50% liver, 25% heart, 25% kidney. I'm thinking I definitely need to get more heart, and might have to add another couple pounds of organ mix, as what I have would only be 10% total of the weight of the grinds... if I'm even doing my math right.

I know nothing about balancing that is why I am still doing mostly kibble, But that doesn't sound like much heart to me.

Your organ mix probably doesn't have enough heart (I'm assuming you're using this to supplement your other meats). I would be tempted to supplement with taurine unless you have access to hearts on their own to use as treats. Added taurine never hurts when dealing with frozen mixes as taurine is very temperature sensitive ciao

Heart should indeed at least equal, if not surpass, the amount of organ you are feeding.

Thats what I thought, should I order more heart or just use the supplement?

Fresh is always better. I only advise using the supplement if either you can't get the real thing, or are in the process of getting them to accept it.

Okay, well I have beef heart available in my grocery stores and still have about a lb of chicken heart so I don't think I'll buy any online. Could you tell me how much I need for 30 lbs of meat/bone/organ? It's starting to confuse me lol

Also, would what I ordered be considered 4 protein sources (turkey, duck, beef, pork), or 6 because of the organ mixes (chicken and rabbit), and is that enough of a variety to last him 3-4 months?

My understanding is that they remove the gut and fur and grind it otherwise whole. That means the grind are basically fully balanced prey. I'd love someone else to chime in.

I asked the owner when I emailed them what their processing method was but she kind of ignored the question. And I don't know if that's true for the larger animals like pork and beef since their bones are too large and dense to grind, I would think that the organ percentage in those two would be relatively high though since they have much larger organs than the rest...but it's just an assumption so I'm still going to stick to the grinds having 5% or less organs.

Looks like you have 6 proteins there And for 30lbs of meat, I'd add 3-5lbs heart.

Alright, well I can buy heart locally so I'm keeping that off this order, how much organ mix should I be ordering? About the same as the heart?

Organ meats are 10% total, so 5% liver 5% other organ

So 2.5-3 lbs for 25-30 lbs of meat?

That would be 10%, yes
