it could be mites. Rocky had them and we didnt know it until he went to the vet because of the scabs. We were treating monthly but skipped a month when we ran out of drops. He also had a yeast infection, so keep those ears clean!

I'm actually hoping it is mites (I'm just not seeing the usual signs). Yeast infection? That's the first time I've heard of that...new thing to research on Google about ferrets...thanks.

Well that is load off of my mind!! ;D Turns out it was just an ear infection in one ear. Have drops for it (2 drops twice a day for a week).

Well that battle is over. Why is it ferrets act like you are using boiling acid whenever you try to put anything in their ears?

Well, we are heading back to the vet...Wilma's ear seems to be clearing up fine with the medication but now one of her back feet is red and swollen to twice the size of the other one. She took a tumble off of the vet's table while we were there but she seemed fine as we checked her over carefully. Obviously we missed something. She seems to be walking on it just fine. No limping, running around just fine and she can stand on it no problem, she is licking it quite a bit which could be why it is red but it looks just awful. I'll try to post some pics shortly.

Do ferrets often so no signs of pain with a broken limb? I'm hoping it is just a sprain.

I couldn't get any decent pictures. She is just too wriggly for one person to try and position her and take the picture.

I've wondered that myself. Unless, the pain is horrific they act like they can't feel anything. I'm sure they can and it's all about the whole "not showing weakness thing" ciao

Can a vet tell a break by feeling the limb or is an x-ray the only option?

Depends on the severity of the fracture I would guess ciao

With Sumo my vet diagnosed the break with an exam only (ie. feeling the limb) but if we had been going the try to save the limb route I would have wanted an x-ray first so that he knew more about the break going in (ie. to shorten the surgery time). Also with Sumo, he didn't use the leg and there was no really noticeable swelling or discolouration. I'm thinking therefore a sprain more likely, or completely unrelated to the fall and an allergy to something

Well the swelling has gone down some this morning but we are headed to the vet in about 1/2 hour so I'll update when we are back.

Hopefully it's just a sprain. Although you might want an xray just in case.
