I"m so glad that everything is going ok with him. Hopefully he will heal up quickly and learn how to deal with his new balance quickly. I also hope that you are able to keep him as quiet as necessary His healing candle burns brightly, gentle hugs going his way ciao

I'm so glad he made it through the surgery okay. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery. Soon he'll be up and running around causing trouble like nothing is amiss. I do hope you feel up to taking pictures, I would love to see his suture site. I understand why you wouldn't too though. Please keep us posted on his recovery!

It'd be really educational for other people who have to experience an amputation, to see what the site looks like. I've been checking this thread so often.

I'm so glad he made it through and I think you made a good decision.
Animals do so well with these things...to us they are huge handicaps, but to them? Just how it is. He'll be up and zooming around in no time.
Diamond is precious, I watched the video and I just love her.

Thanks everyone. I understand that pictures would be helpful but I really am a wuss when my guys aren't well. Seeing them is hard enough, let alone taking pictures...but I did take some pix today. They are not really of the wound though. In this first one you can see some of the wound though and the shaved bit, which makes his butt look so big by the way. I took it early today. He had been sleeping in the hammock in the carrier and I had just woken him and given him some soupies (with his meds in). The carrier not only has a door but the top opens too, so this is taken of him in the hammie from the top, with the top open. He is confined to the carrier for 2 days so that he will rest and not overdo things, although I do get him out to give him cuddles. However, even though he is to be confined, I did not see any reason he had to be in the same place constantly. I took the carrier with me outside, so he could feel the breeze and see, hear and smell the outdoors. While we were out there I had my drinking chocolate and I gave him some chicken hearts. He has been very good about eating, last night I even gave him a frozen feeder mouse so he wouldn't feel like he was missing out. I didn't really expect he would be up to eating it though, so soon after surgery, but he did, so far he is eating whatever I give him, so nothing wrong with his appetite. Anyway I took some pix of him eating his hearts when we were outside. This is one of them. You can't see any of the wound and it is through the carrier door but you get to see his cutie face!

Ok I have more pix from today but be warned this will probably be the last pictorial update for a little while because I don't want to take my camera out each time. I want to be able to concentrate on helping Sumo get all better. Cause I'm a wuss I can't take pix like some can of look here is the amputation site etc. but I have taken pix of him and you can see some things. First a similar pic to yesterday of him in the carrier hammy from the top, I think you can see the Y wound a bit better in this one though. All these other pix were taken later in the day. The vet had said keep him contained for 2 days in the carrier and then I could start building up what he could do, dependant on his comfort in doing things. So this afternoon I figured it had been 2 days (if only just) and planned to set up the play pen out the back so he could be out of the carrier but contained. I used the old playpen that I got for when I took Noodles to Sydney with me when he was adrenal, not the new one my mum gave me for my birthday which was less than a month ago. The old one has no top and the bottom only velcros in and is fine for sick ferret but a healthy one is out in a heartbeat. The new one has a zip in top and bottom. Today was probably the worst day to start on this because it was stinking hot. I waited til a bit later and then set up the playpen in the shade, where there was a bit of a breeze. I didn't put the bottom in it at all because I wanted him to be able to feel the dirt and grass. I put the carrier in the pen, a double water dish, and one of the buckwheat bags I keep in the fridge for the guys to lie on on hot days. I then opened the carrier so that Sumo could come and go as he pleased. I did remove the blankie and hammy from the carrier to give them a quick hand wash while Sumo was able to be elsewhere (hung them on the tree near us to dry, which they did really quickly). Ok these pix aren't necessarily in the order I took them but are in the order I kind of see them to post. This one is again him in the hammy from the top but he is stretched out on his back and you can see the missing leg spot and wound quite well. This next one is him lying on the floor of the carrier taken from the front (the door is open cause he is in the playpen) and is just a different angle noting the missing leg. This one is him snaking around in the pen. At the moment he mostly sort of snakes along but he can move about, while in the carrier he gets in and out of the hammy with ease, he just hasn't worked out how best to walk yet, so does his snake thing. I think it was in the picture of him snaking that you can best see the shaved section and also can see a couple of little dot wounds, they are additional puncture wounds from the dog. This last one is mostly just to end with a cutie face shot but also (as in the previous one) you can see the lump at the end of the sutures. My vet told me it was a bit of muscle clumped there, so not to panic about it. So here's the cutie face shot Sumo says thanks to everyone for pulling for him and while there will probably not be pictorial updates for a while he will ensure I keep you appraised of his progress
