I don't know if this is a health issue or not but Pip all of a sudden is dropping hair like crazy, his sides look like his shaved belly does, like all of the long hair is gone and new hair growing in, but just on the sides so far. Do ferrets blow coats like that because I have never seen this before. I can get a pic if needed.

this is my ferret Al. every year, he had the most dramatic coat changes and he shed like crazy. i would run a brush through him and clumps would wind up on the brush. this picture was actually taken at the beginning of him blowing his coat one spring. it was always very dramatic hair loss. he would be left with just his shabby undercoat and barely any guard hairs. if you can see on his hind legs around the thighs there are barely any guard hairs.

Here's Miss Emily starting hers: She's never blown her coat like this before, but Zeus and Athena both did when they first got here. I was literally pulling out large tufts from all over them. Same with Miss Emily

Well I feel better thanks guys! 7 years of ferrets I have never had one blow coat like this and it seriously freaked me out when I picked him up and saw that. Oh well, I'll guess he'll grow the new coat in along with all the parts he was shaved from the surgery so hopefully in a few weeks he won't look so ratty.

My poor Bear is shedding all over everything right now. Not really 'blowing' his coat, I don't think, but my Furminator brush is sure getting a work out.
Boogie's shedding is minimal, though. Thank goodness or otherwise I'd look like a polar bear. Hair everywhere!

That's likely why he's blowing his coat so badly, goingpostal - he just had surgery, and the anesthetic could cause it easily!

Ohh I noticed Jude had this weird coat pattern today too, guess it's shedding time. Time to get out the EVOO!

Sherry's right...anesthetic causes some really weird sheds. Anesthetic does horrible things to ferrets....h*** it does horrible things to anyone. We look at surgery as something that is done so often that we forget that even though anesthetic is safer, it still kills and it can and does horrible things to blood pressure, blood flow and to the body in general. This kind of stress will show up as horrific fur loss ciao

I can remember loosing hair by the mittfulls after major abdominal surgery. I thought I was going bald. If I hadn't felt so crappy I might have actually cared ;D I don't do anesthetic very well, my blood pressure drops out and my heart rate and body temp drop. I know how my ferrets feel Maybe that's why I think long and hard before making my guys have surgery ciao
