Not being able to sleep I've been trolling around the internet... came across PathVally's web and was checking it out...came across their "Baby FerretCare" and was reading.... and freaked out when I saw this a little over 1/2 way down the page under When I'm Playing "If I play too rough, holler "NO" and a gentle snap on my nose." Oh no! No wonder why I have SATAN ferret...there is actually a breeder that condones "snapping" a ferret baby on the nose!!! Now I've heard about this but assumed that they had removed it from their website... apparently not!!! here's the link to the baby ferret care so ya'll can see for yourselves! www.pathvalleyfarm.com/baby_ferret_care.htm

They also state: "PVF Premium Ferret Diet's "easy chew" pellets can be fed all during your ferret's life but are required for your ferret's first year." ...really now? Is that so?

Wow, that is pretty bad. I can't believe they are actually endorsing that type of discpline. Absolutely ridiculous.

Now you know why PV's are such notorious biters I had really hoped that they had removed that For farm ferrets they're really gorgeous but they are known to be biters and they've got the size and the jaw strength to make them just a bit scary Of all the farms though, I really do like their guys. I've been more successful at getting a long life out of these furkids than any other of the farm ferrets. ciao

Even worse, I've been told about a supposedly reputable breeder who disciplined a biting ferret by biting its nose and hitting it on the head for biting its new owner...and told the buyer to do the same thing if she continued to bite. Fortunately, the buyer knew better even though she was not that experienced with ferrets.

Wow... which "reputable" breeder said/did this?! I would like to bite them on the face. I don't think I should name the breeder at this time, as the new owner is seeking legal advice. The ferret was so terrified and traumatized, and very likely in pain from her bitten nose, that the buyer was unable to gain her trust, and she was rehomed (by the breeder) to someone experienced with a bad biter.

I read somewhere online to hold them scruffed until they yawned, that it was a submissive thing is that true?

It might work with the early neuters, as many of them retain the kit mentality re being scruffed. Scruffing a scared or angry mentally mature entire ferret is generally not a good idea, as it makes them even worse.

To the best of my understanding, mamma ferret would quit scruffing around the age of 4 months? After that, it doesn't always do a whole lot of good, anyway.

I never knew about that Joan. My girls always respond to scruffing, but they're marshalls. Very interesting!

Sophie Ann does this weird exorcist head twist thing so that she can chomp on my hand/fingers when she is scruffed, but she's not scruffed when she's in trouble, only when she's gotten bone, hair or somthing similar in her teeth/throat or she needs to be inspected or flea combed... satan ferret...
