Just got some news!
You may have noticed that FNs are out of stock on a lot of websites. When they come back, they will all be a new no-tool assembly design (just like the Critter Nation). The model numbers are changing to 181, 182 and 183. Nothing else is changing, just tab connectors instead of screws. The assembly instructions are the same as the Critter.
And the reason I thought this was worth sharing... ***They will NOT be compatible with the 141 / 142 / 143, so if you want to add another level to your old model, you'll have to acquire another old version.***
If you're purchasing a new Ferret Nation, be sure to double check the model numbers! Most websites will have their inventory switched over immediately, since Midwest is exclusively manufacturing the new version and shipping that out from now on. So even if a website is showing 140s, you'll probably get drop-shipped the new model.
So... some compatibility complications, but hopefully no more frustrating stories about single-handedly taking hours to build a FN...

Oh thats so cool..I think. Now all future FN buyers won't have the pain of putting it together.

If they aren't as strongly put together as the present FN(and most have told me the CN's aren't as sturdy), I could see some real problems with some of the larger, stronger ferrets. I know of a couple of breeder ferrets that have been able to really shake the present model of the 142. I hate to think what they could do with a "snap- together"

yea, i don't think the snap together cage would be that safe. its one of the reasons i went for a ferret nation.

I was just going over the Critter Nation again and the only real difference in "sturdiness" I noticed was that you could pull the top off with a little work. If you disassembled/reassembled the thing a few times, I could see where the plastic pegs might get worn and make it come off more easily. If you had a destructive or determined fert (and don't we all ) you could probably use plastic zip ties at the corners to reinforce them. I imagine one of the chief complaints Midwest was hearing (besides the shelves) was that it was a pain to put together/take down/move. So there's that trade-off between sturdiness and ease of assembly.

I'd rather have a little more work and a safe fuzz than something that's "convenient and easy," and that won't last or be as safe for the ferrets

what would be nice is if they offered one for cheaper and the same old one for more expensive

A quarter?! How did you two manage that? I'd rather have a little more work and a safe fuzz than something that's "convenient and easy," and that won't last or be as safe for the ferrets I completely agree. I don't think the FN was THAT hard to put together. I'm 4'10 and I did it by myself with a step ladder. hat would be nice is if they offered one for cheaper and the same old one for more expensive I think that is a GREAT idea! I imagine one of the chief complaints Midwest was hearing (besides the shelves) was that it was a pain to put together/take down/move. So there's that trade-off between sturdiness and ease of assembly. True! I think that midwest should have just made the instructions more clear. Or a DVD you can watch that goes step by step

Did you guys have help putting it together? I didn't so to me it was a hassle. When I put the add on ,on I scared my manrats half to death. It took me an hour to calm them down. Took me 2 hours of calming plenty of cursing and a very sore middle aged woman the next day. I love the cage but putting it together with no help ugh. They should put that on the box,2 people needed to put together. 3 would be better he or she can wipe your brow. I still hate that night it won't leave me for a while.

Hubby & i put a 142 together in less than an hour as we have others to look at for example as it was a slightly used one. I am still not happy with the new tray shelves. if you have a restless ferret - it can easily push up on the tray shelf & it comes crashing down - they are heavier now.. I will be in touch with Midwest yet again.

It seems to work.
