I think i might die.
Can anyone tell me how to tell if my ferret has a mass in his abdomen? i think i might have found one... its killing me. Hagrid had small weird poops today and as of today he is chewing on EVERYTHING and i mean EVERYTHING when i say it.
I think Hagrid might have a blockage. FML i don't know what to do!!!

Is your ferret eating? drinking? straining in the litter box? Lethargic?
If you suspect intestinal blockage due to eating things that should not be consumed, feed canned pumpkin (without the sugar and spices as in pumpkin pie filling)
You may need to get an oral syringe for force feeding. I recommend feeding at least 4 tablespoons - wait a bit, and feed more. Isolate your ferret with a clean litter box and water so you can monitor output. Smash and pick through all poop to look for items that may have been consumed (remote control buttons, erasers, hairballs, etc.)

i have all of that because of what happened to Rob. we thought he had a blockage... He did not have thin long poops but he had small mushy poops. What i want to know is how to tell if a ferret has a mass. i am pretty sure hagrid had one in his upper abdomen and its pretty big if it is what i think it is. i want to be sure that it IS a mass and i am not paranoid

You have to have the vet check for a mass. You also need to take Hagrid into the vet if you suspect a blockage. If he does, he might pass it while at home- then again, he may not. In the interim until you can get there, push the pumpkin, and alternate every other hour with 1/2 tsp of vaseline.

ok. so three tablespoons pumpkin, 1/2 tsp vaseline? I really cannot make it to the vet. we are worse off now then with Rob!!! do you know what a mass would be like? You already know what Hagrid looks like. he is so scrawny! he had such a small poop also... i will give him vasiline at 8:15 then. and at 9:00 i will give him pumpkin again. thanks for the help. if he gets worse off then we will take him to the vet like we did with Rob. i am going to get Xrays this time so it will be cheaper. i just noticed now that Stiv is acting rather sleepy now. GRRRRR

A lot of non-ferret vets cannot identify a mass a ferret's gut just by feeling the stomach. You can feel all knids of lumps in the tummy that may be NORMAL. It takes experience to determine what's in there. Some less experienced vets rely on x-ray/ultrasound to determine what's what inside a ferret. -jennifer

I cannot make it to a vet. especially at this time of night! they close at 6:00pm! and that is not even the exotic vet. it is just a normal vet... thanks for the help, i will update as he.. passes stool and tell you if i find anything.
could it possibly be an enlarged organ? i checked all of the ferrets and they all seem to have something there. but Hagrid's is bigger

Is it on the right hand side? It could well be his spleen. Please do NOT palpate this if it is enlarged, as it can rupture. Not a good thing! Yes, please keep us updated on Hagrid!

Don't worry i don't want to be poking around unless i need to! i do a routine mass-checking every week to see if they have anything i had been doing it since Rob died:(. when i saw his small poop i thought i might do it early. it feels a bit like what rob had in his belly. he had a tumor but that is where a blockage would be... its in his tummy around the middle and it could just be an organ...
what are some signs of inslinoma?

"Signs of Insulinoma are: • Sleeping a lot • Frequent “dead ferret” or "ferret coma" sleep. • “Spacing out” • Trouble waking up • Wobbly • Dragging hind legs • Unable to use hind legs properly • Stumbling or falling to the side • Drooling • Pawing at the mouth • Periods of no appetite/no interest in food and then periods of “gorging” on food. Insulinoma is often a disease that is not diagnosed until the very obvious (and scary) symptoms appear. Read more: holisticferret60.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=insulinoma&action=display&thread=2702#ixzz1dvejYqQ4" I would be far more suspicious of a blockage and/or tummy upset from possible chocolate consumption at this point. Keep giving the pumpkin and vaseline until you see a nice, big fat, orange pumpkin poop. If you dissect it and dont find anything foreign in it, keep giving the pumpkin for a few days just to be safe. If it is an enlarged spleen, be very careful with him. Enlarged spleens can rupture all by themselves so seeing a vet as soon as possible is definitely recommended.

agh i am psycing my self out! i don't know whether it is a blockage or a problem with the spleen?!? i will know for sure it is the spleen if he blows up fast but i will keep giving pumpkin anyway. i know if he is not peeing it could be the prostate i know a lot. he has been showing some early adrenal signs so i have no idea what is going on.
is he tired? a little bit he is chewing consistantly he is skinny so stumbling a little bit would be expected? has been a bit jumpy lately yes but that has been for a few days...
I am about to give him some more pumpkin now. i will mix it with vaseline
